Round 7

27 May 2014 by David Howlett

We travelled to Montrose last Saturday for a great rivalry with all 3 teams!
The U19s played catch up footy all day, trailing on the scoreboard at each of the breaks. The boys were very upbeat at the 3/4 time break believing they had enough left in the tank to run over Montrose in the final term. Down by 16 points at the start of the last quarter it was going to take a special effort to get the four points. To the boys credit they kept to instruction, with Macca & Jack providing run off half back, both Ellery & Hagger winning plenty of the ball in the midfield and with an open forward line, this allowed the Hawks to run out winners by 8 points.
The Development Squad played at incredible pace throughout the game with a solid first quarter effort with a 10 point lead! In the second quarter we held Montrose to 3 points to be up by 27 at half time. Third quarter both sides came out firing after the break kicking 16 goals in total with some great goals on the run from Deon and Dysan to keep the intensity in the game. In the last quarter the boys kept the goals coming. Matt Mitchell taking some great marks on the lead to finish the day with a 55 point win!
The Hawks took on old Div 2 rival Montrose. The game started at a very fast and furious pace, it was the Hawks who held the advantage at the quarter time break leading by 11 points. The second quarter was also played at the same level as the first, it was the home team who held the advantage at half time leading by 9 points. The third quarter saw an even contest between the two sides, it was the home team who held the advantage by 2 points going into the final term. The last quarter again was an even contest with the Hawks looking like winners with minuets to go, but a snapped goal by Montrose from a boundary throw in what was virtually the last play of the game unfortunately saw our boys went down by 5 points in what was a very entertaining game of football. – Blair Morris
